The Lone Wolfe Brewing Company

The Lone Wolfe Brewing Company

Lone Wolfe Beer FlightLast weekend, I drove up to New Hampshire for a weekend at the lake like I do most summers. This time, I decided to check out a couple breweries on the way up. One of these breweries is Lone Wolfe Brewing Company.

The Lone Wolfe Brewing Company is the brainchild of Graham Combes. The one barrel, nano brewery with a 20 seat taproom is located in the heart of downtown Wolfeboro, NH. The cozy taproom was renovated using nearly 100% recycled materials. We sat at the small counter made of a long slice of tree log – very cool. Our host was warm and friendly and provided some neat tidbits about the brewery. He shared that the beers have become so popular yet difficult to get, that the brewery would be moving in the near future to Graham’s farm where there’s space to expand the operations. The taproom will remain on Main Street.

I opted for four-beer flights and, as you can tell from my selections, it was still morning. I nibbled on a warm, soft pretzel with a side of tart granny mustard while sipping. My lineup was:

BreakFast Stout (Stout – American Imperial / Double) – black opaque with a creamy head in the glass – just what I craved for breakfast! Tons of grain flavors with chocolate and mocha notes.

Milk Stout (Stout – Milk / Sweet) – dark brown in the glass with a tall creamy foamy head. Roasted coffee flavors with super malty notes. Bit of sweetness on the finish – gives other milk stouts a run for their money.

Cascadian Dark (American Black Ale) – I’m a sucker for a black IPA so this dark ale was right up my alley. This beauty offers sweet malty flavors laced with citrusy notes. There’s a nice level of hoppyness

Batch #167 (American Pale Ale) – crazy pale compared to my other three beers. A perfect ending to those darks with great sour, hoppy flavors. Just a very different (in a good way) beer with the perfect amount of tartness.

The Lone Wolfe Brewing Company is a must stop for any craft beer fan visiting the area.

  1. They all sound great and right up my alley. Curious about the Pale Ale, though. I drink a lot of them and have made a few, but wouldn’t say any were sour. Just a dry finish. Certainly not as sweet (malty) as the Stouts. You did say American Pale Ale so that rules out a Belgian origin for sourness unless the yeast was Belgian. Any other ideas or thoughts. I will definitely try their beer if I’m up that way…nice to talk about beer for a change of pace. ????????

  2. David – thanks for the note. The pale ale was REALLY different, but in a good way. All their beers were outstanding, and I know my way around a brewery :).

Hopefully with their brewery operations expansion, we’ll see some of their brews down here in NJ.
