South Hill Cider Bluegrass Russet

South Hill Cider Bluegrass Russet

When I was doing winery visits last Fall in the Finger Lakes, I was introduced to South Hill Cider Bluegrass Russet by one of my favorite FLX wineries – Heron Hill Winery. I was intrigued that a winery would carry and sell a cider by what could be considered a competitor, so I decided to try it.

The ciders at South Hill Cider are crafted in small batches by Steve Selin who calls himself “apple-hunter, cidermaker, orchardist”. The apples at South Hill Cider come from wild trees, abandoned orchards and orchards of high quality cider apples. South Hill Cider produces ciders with “individuality, quality, and elegance reflecting the terroir of the Finger Lakes region”.

The cider I sampled, Bluegrass Russet, is made using a New York state native apple, the Golden Russet. It’s a crisp, sparkling, off-dry cider with tons of mousse-ish bubble and lovely acidity. Beyond the apple flavors, there are notes of tart berries that help not create an overly sweet cider, something I don’t enjoy.

If you can find this cider, it’ll set you back around $18. It’s one of the best ciders I’ve had and worth searching around for it.

Cheers,

Veronique

Stone & Key Cellars Ice Apple Cider

Stone & Key Cellars Ice Apple Cider

Stone & Key Cellars Ice CiderA friend from Pennsylvania brought this to dinner one night and I served it with a salted caramel dessert, which was an okay pairing but would have been better with a dessert not so sweet.

This ice cider is produced from a blend of apples grown and pressed by Solebury Orchard. The juice is then cryo-concentrated and fermented by Stone & Key Cellars.

It’s golden in the glass with an unmistakable ripe apple aroma. It’s definitely sweet, but not cloyingly so with fresh flavors and some acidity on the finish.

Pairings: Foie gras, blue cheese, desserts that aren’t overly sweet – stone fruit tarts, roasted figs.

Style: Dessert Wine

Grape Type(s): Apple

Region: Montgomeryville, PA, USA

Price: $27.95 (375 ml bottle)

Farnum Hill Extra Dry Cider

Farnum Hill Extra Dry Cider

Farnum Hill Extra Dry CiderPale yellow in the glass, this sparkling cider is simply outstanding. When poured, this cider has a very fizzy white head that’s quick to dissipate. The aromas are of apple with more earthy fruit, like plum. In the mouth, this cider offers big fruity flavors with sweet notes and a dry finish with a nice level of acidity.

For fans of dry-sparkling wine – this is a cider for you. I hadn’t been a huge fan of ciders but when I dined at Thirty Acres and instead of a wine, I was poured this cider with octopus served with aged sherry vinegar, I was in heaven.

Pairings: Spicy foods – Indian, Thai or Mexican, fruit tarts, fish or seafood

Style: Sparkling Cider

Alcohol Content: 7.5%

Closure: Mushroom cork with wire hood

Region: Lebanon, NH, USA

Price: $13
