Best Dishes of 2019

Best Dishes of 2019

My “real” job had me on the road over 50% of the year in 2019 and I also took several food-centric vacations where I had the opportunity to have many outstanding meals. I’ve tried to narrow down the list to the 17 best dishes I enjoyed during the past year.

Here’s the list in restaurant name alphabetical order.

Aloette, Toronto, Canada – So many great sharing plates but my favorite was the potato gnocchi with sweet potato, bacon, sage and chestnut.

Aquila Pizza Al Forno, Little Falls, NJ – The only thing as lovely as the soppressata and Meyer lemon pizza with its perfect, slightly-tart and salty crust charred in all the right places is the team behind the cozy pizzeria.

Au Cheval, Chicago, IL – If you’ve had the Au Cheval burger, you know why it’s on this list. Every time I have it, I feel it’s the best burger anywhere and worthy of all the accolades. Juicy, simple, beefy on a great soft bun.

August, New Orleans, LA – The potato gnocchi with blue crab, black truffle and Parmesan is the best single dish I had in 2019.

Brasserie Mémère, Closter, NJ – This new French bistro is simply fantastique and our favorite of the many dishes we sampled was the buttery, garlicky escargots served with perfect bread.

Café Chameleon, Bloomingdale, NJ – The 60-day dry aged beef with pommes Anna with a bone marrow sauce was the ultimate indulgence by the king of indulgent, delicious food, Chef Bryan Gregg.

Central Provisions, Portland, ME – On special the evening we visited was a lamb larb with lemongrass, Serrano and mint that we could scoop in bib lettuce leaves. All the food we sampled at this Portland hot spot was great, but this was amazing.

Frasca Food and Wine, Boulder, CO – I never typically order salmon out, but was glad I got the king salmon at this award-winning restaurant. The best I’ve ever had and served at the perfect temperature.

Heirloom Kitchen, Old Bridge, NJ – These ribs were a special of the evening when I visited this top restaurant earlier this year. They were…perfect in flavor and texture.

Hélicoptère, Montreal, Canada – Simply a lovely meal of shared plates that ended with poultry liver mousse on a financier. Wow, way to leave us wanting more.

Her Name is Han, New York, NY – Everything we sampled at this Korean soul food restaurant was bursting with flavor and delectable but the dessert of black sesame ice cream with green tea biscuit crumbs and dried strawberry was the happiest ending we could have hoped for.

Justine, New Orleans, LA – The steak tartare served with mushroom confit was the best “classic” tartare I enjoyed this year.

La Cevicheria, Cartagena, Columbia – Trio of the award-winning restaurant’s best ceviches where some of the best we’ve ever had. Fish / octopus / shrimp prepared with mango, lime and ketchup sauce.

McLoons Lobster Shack, Spruce Head Island, ME – The lobster roll of all lobster rolls. Plus, in an amazing picnic-like setting on the Maine shore overlooking lobster/fishing boats.

Mercantile Dining & Provision, Denver, CO – This special restaurant’s made my “best of” list since 2017 when I first visited. This year, while there are several dishes I could have included, the Hamachi with compressed melon, blood orange needs to be highlighted.

Monarque, Montreal, Canada – The venison tartare and sea urchin with salsa verde, chilli on grilled focaccia was outstanding and called my name. Uni anything!

The Inn at Bay Fortune, Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island, Canada – This chowder was part of the best meal I had in 2019. The Fireworks Feast is THE experience to be had where the reception prior to dinner is held outdoors and where all the food is cooked over open flame (except for the greatest oysters served raw).

Vesta Wood Fired Pizza & Bar, East Rutherford, NJ – The special arancini the evening we visited was served with the most delicious foie gras sauce.

Here’s to hoping 2020 is as delicious as 2019 was!

Cheers,

Veronique

Get the Negg Now

With the holiday around the corner, many of us will be making deviled eggs for parties. What the best part of deviled eggs? Eating them. What’s the worst part of deviled eggs, peeling them! The is where Negg comes in handy.

About Negg ®

The Negg hard-boiled egg peeler provides a solution to avoid disastrous egg shell scenarios. Thanks to entrepreneurs Bonnie Tyler and Sheila Torgan, peeling eggs can be fast, easy and fun with the. Like most new concepts, the inspiration came from a moment of frustration. Bonnie agreed to bring a dozen deviled eggs to a party and was growing increasingly frustrated as she fought to remove the shells. She initially thought her invention would be a part-time hobby, but it’s turned into a booming business and her full-time job.

Made of BPA-free materials, and available in 6 vibrant colors, the NEGG is proudly made in America. A little cold water and some shaking is all it takes for this hard-boiled egg peeler to work.

How to Get your Negg

There’s free domestic shipping on orders of $15 or more when buying directly via Negg on its website. For last minute holiday presents, I’ve found it on Amazon with Prime available. Perfect stocking stuffer at a low cost of $15 for folks on keto diets too!

Negg was provided to me as a sample to try and I love it and high recommend it!

The Time Chef Bryan Gregg Cooked at My Home

The Time Chef Bryan Gregg Cooked at My Home

Last Saturday night, I hosted a dinner party for some friends in my wine group and a couple other wine afficionados to celebrate my guy’s 50th birthday. It was all due to be informal under a ‘surf & turf’ theme with the birthday boy manning the grill. Then, something neat happened and award-winning Chef Bryan Gregg agreed to come to my home to cook for the group! My guests were very familiar with Chef Gregg as we were all avid fans of his former restaurant, Escape, in Montclair, NJ.

Chef Bryan Gregg

I let Chef know what my guy likes, foodwise, and he crafted the most decadent, delicious menu based on the finest ingredients he could source or forage himself. Here was the menu:

First Course

Japanese Wagyu Beef, Osetra, Pommes Rosti

Second Course

Lobster, Late Season Tomatoes, Avocado

Third Course

Whole Roasted Foie Gras, Black Fig Jam, Sourdough

Fourth Course

Dry Aged Ribeye, Farmers Market Vegetable, Bone Marrow Butter

Dessert Course

Valley Shepherd Cheeses

Key Lime Tart (by me, because it’s the birthday boy’s favorite)

The dinner was outstanding and the wines poured were amazing. Some Chefs, even with a resume like Chef Gregg’s, will occasionally agree to cook for private parties, so don’t hesitate to ask your favorite cook!

Cheers,

Veronique

Care for Hunger Cast Iron Skillets Launch

Care for Hunger Cast Iron Skillets Launch

On December 1, FAIR CookwareTM will be launching a Kickstarter project, utilizing crowdsourcing to help bring cast iron skillets to your local food banks. The Christmas spirit project aims to provide 350,000 high-quality and competitively-priced cast iron skillets to both consumers and people struggling with everyday essentials, based on a ‘buy one, give one’ philosophy.

FAIR Cookware skillets are based on good value for money with four different models – 8.5’’, 10.5’’, 12.5’’ and a grill pan (10.5”) – you can prepare almost anything in these classic and durable pans. The skillets are sampled and tested to ensure the highest standards, pre-seasoned and have a very high heat capacity. They can be used virtually any heat source.

For every skillet purchased, the backer will donate the exact same one to someone in need.

More than 46 million people in the U.S. rely on food banks and food pantries. FAIR Cookware contributes to the fight against hunger with their Care for Hunger project, helping America’s local hungry during the holiday season by providing items that are essential to daily life.

You can support FAIR Cookware on their Kickstarter page on December 1st; starting at $15 for a donation and $59 for the Early Bird adopters. For more information, please visit FAIR CookwareTM on Faircookware.com.

When Chef Peter Minaki Cooks For You

When Chef Peter Minaki Cooks For You

One of the best things about food blogging is connecting with interesting people. One of these interesting people is Chef/Author/Blogger Peter Minaki. Peter’s based in Toronto, Canada and his niche is Greek food, libations and travel. You can read his popular food/travel blog at: www.kalofagas.ca

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Peter several times, both in New Jersey/New York where I live and also a couple times in his beautiful hometown of Toronto. For selfish reasons, I kept telling Peter he had to come host some of his cooking classes/pop up dinners in my area and a few years back, he did just that. Greek food is by far my favorite cuisine, so Peter’s food is right up my alley.

I’m part of a 4-couple wine group that meets every 6-8 weeks for dinner over glasses of stellar wines. A couple years ago, I proposed to the group that we have Peter cook for us when he came down to teach cooking classes and to host pop up dinners, and, to my pleasure, all loved the idea. Peter cooked at my home and we shopped for food together. The evening was a huge hit and thus, we decided to do it again in early summer this year.

Peter and I shopped for the food items together again, a fun activity in itself, and he cooked at fellow wine group friends Jen and Harry’s home. We voted on our favorite dishes and I worked with Peter to create a very extensive menu for the evening. Some of the dishes featured were: my favorite – grilled octopus, grilled lamb chops, branzino baked in a salt crust and Peter’s signature chocolate ganache tart. There were MANY other memorable dishes that evening with some spectacular wines.

I highly-recommend this experience, ideally with Peter. The cost per guest is very affordable, especially when wine comes from our cellars and not a pricy restaurant.

Get to know Peter on social media (yes, you’ll be drooling on your keyboard over the amazing food and travel photography he shares):

Happy National Burger Day

Happy National Burger Day

Now & Tater Burger

Today’s National Burger Day, thus one of my favorite food-dedicated days of the year! While I’m typically a fan of ‘normal’ burgers, I couldn’t allow this day to go by without showing you what CALLAHAN’S Hot Dogs in Norwood, NJ is doing – wild, right? The Owner Daniel DeMiglio says the popular restaurant’s motto is So Big, So Good and after seeing these photos and sampling the Stuffed Truffle Gouda Mac N’ Cheese Burger, I buy into that concept!

Now & Tater Burger – House made tater tot bun – caramelized onion, queso dip, bacon, smoked whiskey ketchup, lettuce, tomato and pickle

Stuffed Burger

Stuffed Truffle Gouda Mac N’ Cheese Burger – smoked Gouda mac n’ cheese, white truffle oil, bacon, & two fresh Angus chuck burger patties

So Big Signature “BBQ Burger (see headline photo) – Angus beef, onion ring, caramelized onions with bacon, house made cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce

Callahan’s Hot Dogs: 10 Broad St. Norwood / (844) 468-3641.
