2013 Giacomo Grimaldi Barolo Tasting Notes

2013 Giacomo Grimaldi Barolo Tasting Notes

Had this lovely Barolo at a dinner party I hosted at my home and boy did it deliver. Paired great with the beef I served, but also held up to the secondary meat, pork belly. Pretty traditional, classic version of Barolo.

In the glass: Dark ruby red

Aromas (nose): Leather, mocha aromas with some earthy notes

Flavors (palate): Chocolate-coated cherries flavor with some dried fruit notes

Texture/finish: Medium body, velvety medium finish

Pairing: Grilled or roasted meats (beef, lamb, duck), charcuterie

Wine type: Red wine

Grape: Nebbiolo

Region: Piedmont, Italy

Cost: $75 – $90

Adding the 2013 Giacomo Grimaldi Barolo to my repertoire.

Cheers, Veronique

2016 Idlewild The Bird Flora & Fauna Red

2016 Idlewild The Bird Flora & Fauna Red

2016 Idlewild The Bird Flora & Fauna RedI recently had the pleasure to dining at a restaurant with a creative, youthful wine list. One of the bottles I order was the 2016 Idlewild The Bird. That turned out to be my favorite wine of the evening.

Idlewild is the brainchild of Owner/Winemaker Sam Bilbro who made the prestigious Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 list in 2017. Idlewild is an Italian-inspired portfolio of wines primarily sourced from Mendocino County’s Fox Hill Vineyard (some also comes from Sonoma). Bilbro’s passion for the wines of Northern Italy’s Piedmont region have translated to the growing of unusual-for-California Italian grape.

This is a very food-friendly wine and I primarily ordered it to pair with several dishes we were sampling. Was outstanding with my lamb dish. This wine is affordable enough to be a weeknight go-to wine…if you can find it.

2008 M. Marengo BaroloKnew as soon as I sniffed this wine that it’d be right up my alley. Garnet in the glass, the earthy aromas were sweetened with dark fruit. In the mouth, it’s round and velvety with plummy, dark cherry flavors with mocha notes.

Pairings: Pasta with meaty sauce, duck, roasted mushrooms

Style: Red Wine

Grape Type(s): Nebbiolo

Region: Piedmont, Barolo, Italy

2005 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna d’la Roul

2005 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna d’la Roul

2005 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna d’la RoulThis wine was aerated then decanted for an hour prior to tasting. In the glass, it’s deep garnet. Bouquet wasn’t as prominent as I’d expected. Light aromas of cherry cordial with earthy notes. In the mouth, it offers great fruit flavors with black licorice, leather and blackberry notes. Smokey finish with the tannins one would expect from such a young wine.

I’d like to try this wine with another 5 years of aging. 94 points Robert Parker.

Pairings: Game, beef, duck, pasta with mushroom or red sauce, cheese course

Style: Red wine

Grape Type(s): Nebbiolo

Region: Piedmont, Italy
