1991 Château Montus Madiran Cuvée Prestige

1991 Château Montus Madiran Cuvée Prestige

1991 Château Montus Madiran Cuvée PrestigeOn a recent visit to Quebec, my dad dug deep in his cellar for this purely wonderful bottle. While I’ve read this wine should have drunk before 2011, its perfect storing condition extended its life. In the glass, it’s a beautiful brick color with the type of barnyard funk I absolutely love. In the mouth, it’s round with plummy fruit that’s held up nicely. Long gone are the high tannins typical of this grape.

Yum, just yum.

Pairings: Lamb, duck, mushroom-based dishes.

Style: Red Wine

Grape Type(s): Tannat

Region: Madiran, Southwest France

Price: $60

2012 Graffigna Centenario Elevation Red Blend

2012 Graffigna Centenario Elevation Red Blend

2012 Graffigna Centenario Elevation Red BlendYes, this is a $10 wine. No, it shouldn’t be disregarded based on cost as it drinks well beyond its price.

In the glass, it’s inky and really handsome. The grapes in this blend complement each other so well with jammy stone fruit flavors mixing with dark berry and cherry ones. This wine screams for food and I served it with a pork crown roast which was a great pairing. Slightly tannic on the finish with ripe, dark fruit that lingers on the palate.

Pairings: Grilled meat, tomato sauce-based dishes, roast pork or poultry.

Style: Red Wine

Grape Type(s): 20% Bonarda, 20% Cabernet Saugivnon, 20% Malbec, 20% Syrah, 20% Tannat

Region: Tulum Valley, Argentina

Price: $10

This wine was provided to me for sampling and I am adding it to my repertoire as it’s truly enjoyable.

Vinedo de los Vientos Alcyone Tannat NV

Vinedo de los Vientos Alcyone Tannat NV

I enjoyed this red dessert wine from Uruguay at a local restaurant where the owner described it as ‘liquid raisinettes’. That quirky description might not fit in most wine reviews, but it was very much on par, and I opted to share it.

In the glass, this wine from Uruguay is deep purplish red with a bit of a syrupy consistency. On the nose, there are aromas of dark berries laced with pumpkin pie spices. In the mouth, the flavors are of dark raspberry and blackberries, chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla.

Style: Red Dessert Wine

Grape Type(s): Tannat

Region: Atlantida, Canelones, Uruguay
