New Wines of Greece – New York City

New Wines of Greece – New York City

I had the pleasure of attending the New Wines of Greece in Manhattan this week and found the event fantastic. First – the people – exhibiting wineries, event coordinators and the catering staff were passionate about their destination and products, second – the wines I sampled were pretty outstanding, third – my favorite NYC chef and cookbook author, Michael Psilakis, provided the amazing food.

Here are some of the wines I sampled that were gems:

  • 2009 Antonopoulos Moscofilero, Mantinia: a bold, fruit-forward, almost creamy wine. Long, perfectly dry, smoky finish.
  • 2009 Domaine Katsaros Chardonnay: Low acidity, aged in French oak for 5 months, buttery (in a good way).
  • 2009 Savatiano Papagiannakos: Light, palest greenish in color, fruity with a hint of tannins.
  • 2009 Gaia Estate Assyrtiko: Rich honey and fruit notes without much sweetness. Refined, elegant wine that reminded me of a nicer white Burgundy.

As far as food was concerned, Michael Psilakis didn’t cut any corners. The ‘catering’ food he brought to this event was what he serves at his restaurant. My favorite dish from Psilakis’ Kefi, grilled octopus, was served on huge platters. Michael ensured that platters, bowls and dishes were filled to the brim and stayed fresh, and even served when a crowd amassed at certain stations.

Great event all around.

2007 d’Arenberg The Dry Dam Riesling

2007 d’Arenberg The Dry Dam Riesling

'07 d'Arenburg Riesling

'07 d'Arenburg Riesling

This outstanding Australian Riesling is the palest yellow with some greenish nuances.  This vintage was plagued with extreme drought producing very small yields.

The nose is of a bright, youngish Riesling.  There’s tons of rosy floral aromas in the glass with hints of lime and apple that are both in-your-face and elegant (odd, no?).

The finish is super long and dry, which is great since you’ll want to remember this wine long after you sip it.  This wine could use some cellaring to enhance  its color, richness and complexity.

Chateau Montelena Riesling

Chateau Montelena Riesling

Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend a Chateau Montelena tasting at Crystal Springs Resort as part of the New Jersey Food and Wine Festival and I was wowed by not only its super Cabernet Sauvignons but by its fabulous 2008 Riesling.

The 2008 Chateau Montelena Potter Valley Riesling reminds me of a top Mosel or Alsace wine. The golden wine is luscious, features rich, ripe fruit while still being crisp and dry. It offers a long finish and might be the best example of Riesling I’ve enjoyed from California.

Chateau Montelena is renowned for its elegant Cabs, but this Riesling is certainly a gem that winemaker Bo Barrett should be proud of.

2007 Honig Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc

2007 Honig Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc

Honig Late Harvest

Honig Late Harvest

Had the pleasure of sampling this wine at the Honig Vineyards and absolutely loved it. The nose on this luscious wine is pure honey and the look of it is syrupy and golden.

The 2007 Honig Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc is a mouthful of succulent sweet melon, dried apricot and rich caramel panna cotta. Great acidity and minerality for this type of wine. Aged in new French oak, this dessert wine’s alcohol level is 11%.

Great, great dessert wine.

Pairings: Cheese plate drizzled with honey, custard-based desserts

Style: White Wine

Grape Type(s): Sauvignon Blanc

Sektkellerei Szigeti Cuvee Prestige Brut NV

Really enjoyed this bubbly from Burgenland, Austria at a recent tasting. The wine is cremant-like with tons of tiny bubbles and a floral nose with great acidity. Golden in color, this wine is a great option when looking for an affordable sparkling wine.

'07 Summers Le Nude

This Alexander Valley unoaked Chardonnay is made with grapes from the Arroyo Secco region of Monterey County. This palest yellow wine features the tiniest bubbles in the glass. The 2007 Summers Le Nude Chardonnay shows a big, tropical fruit body and a super crisp finish with just the right amount of acidity. Very enjoyable wine.

2007 Alta Vista Atemporal Blend

2007 Alta Vista Atemporal

2007 Alta Vista Atemporal

I selected this wine for a ‘blends’ tasting last week since it’s 43% Malbec, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, and 10% Petit Verdot.

The 2007 Alta Vista Atemporal is just about the darkest purple wine you’ll find and it’s gorgeous to look at in the glass.  The nose is light upon uncorking but decanting for 30 minutes enhanced the bouquet and brought out some notes of spice and black cherry.  This Mendoza, Argentina wine was aged for 12 months in French oak.  The taste is floral from the Malbec, smoky from the Syrah and with some light tannins from the Cabernet.  The finish is long and enjoyable.  Good buy at the price point.

2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet

2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill

2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill

I selected this wine for a ‘blends’ tasting last week since it’s 75% Shiraz and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon.  This wine has an appealing purple-ruby hue in the glass. The nose is of in-your-face, vibrant berries with a fair amount of oak from the eight months this wine spent in seasoned oak. One sip of the 2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet and you’ll be hit with coffee, dark spiced fruit and a lovely chocolate finish. This medium-bodied wine is well-balanced and lightly tannic.

2008 Honig Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc

2008 Honig Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc

I’ve tasted and liked the 2008 Honig Sauvignon Blanc in the past, but I recently sampled it again during a Sauvignon Blanc tasting and really enjoyed how different it was compared to the others. Here are three things I appreciated about this wine:

’08 Honig Sauvignon Blanc

1) It is medium-bodied, which I miss in many other Sauvignon Blancs in this price range.

2) As the wine warmed a bit, I got a big mouthful of chewy mango and tons of other tropical fruits.

3) The finish is pleasantly long with bouncy citrusy notes.

I typically think of Sauvignon Blanc for warm Summer parties where a refreshing, uncomplicated wine is de rigueur, but the ’08 Honig would also be perfect with a roasted pork chop in the middle of Winter.

Note: 89 points Robert Parker

Pairings: Fish, seafood, especially seared scallops
