2014 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay

2014 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay

2014 Au Bon Climat ChardonnayOn the nose apricot and citrus with flinty notes. The palate of this medium to full-bodied wine brings more citrus with a decent level of acidity on the finish. A great value for a California Chardonnay of this caliber.

I’m a big fan of Jim Clendenen, Au Bon Climat’s winemaker, who’s been making high quality wines in Santa Barbara County since the early 1980s.

Pairings: Grilled fish or seafood, poultry.

Style: White Wine

Grape Type(s): Chardonnay

Region: Santa Barbara County, California, USA

Price: $22

2010 Jonata Tierra

2010 Jonata Tierra

2010 Jonata TierraIf Jonata makes a “just decent” wine, I haven’t had it. This is another super effort by winemaker Matt Dees. Smoke and spice with fruit notes on the nose. Dark berries, pepper notes, chocolate flavors. The half of the bottle I’d decanted was clearly softer but with still with lovely fruit. The half not decanted was bolder with ripe dark berry flavors with mocha / chocolate notes.

Elegant, smooth, well-balanced wine. I want more.

Pairings: Grilled meat, cheese course.

Style: Red Wine

Grape Type(s): 95% Sangiovese, 5% Syrah

Region: Santa Ynez Valley, California, USA

Price: $75

2010 Clone 5 Pinot Noir

2010 Clone 5 Pinot Noir

2010 Clone 5 Pinot NoirNice bright cherry red in the glass with equally nice and bright cherry aromas jumping out of the glass. Cherry continues on the palate but with raspberry and even strawberry present. The body is medium in heaviness with a smooth, silky mouthfeel. Finish offers a little pepper.

Nice example of Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir and perfect to uncork at a barbecue.

Pairings: Pizza, red sauced dishes, burgers.

Style: Red Wine

Grape Type(s): Pinot Noir

Region: Santa Barbara County, California, USA

Price: $20
